Mahannon Lavellan is one of two mages working under the Keeper of clan Lavellan. Although Mahannon has great skill, his affinity offensive magic and quick temper meant he was unlikely to take up the mantel of Keeper.
He was dutifully trained, and undoubtedly well cared for. Despite this, he always felt like a second choice, the backup for if something happened to the Keepers current second- and this the rift between himself, his Keeper, and by extension his clan, grew.
And in this rift, Mahannon found blood magic.
Despite being very familiar with the risks, with the taboo, Mahannon immediately felt drawn to blood magic. The power it could help him achieve, the rebellion of just using it- was too much to deny himself.
He trained with blood magic for years, dabbling from the age of 17 onward. His clan, inevitably, caught wind of this. Namely, after an incident where Mahannon wound up passed out after being overzealous with his own blood (which, unless he comes in contact with someone immediately hostile, is the only blood he uses). Mahannon was still cared for despite this breaking of taboo, but his status as future keeper was almost guaranteed to never come to pass.
When Keeper Lavellan caught wind of the Conclave, Mahannon was first choice to go. He was powerful and could hold his own, and though they wouldn’t admit it- he was more dispensable than the Keeper’s true second, and many others in his clan, who already had families of their own. It was expected that Mahannon would be able to go, watch, and come back quick enough that nothing risky or condemning would occur.
That went about as well as you’d expect.
